EWART LAYNE IS AWARDED
THE MASTERS OF LAWS DEGREE

A member of the Grenada 17 political prisoners held at Richmond Hill Prison, Ewart Layne, has just been awarded his Masters of Law (LLM) in Commercial and Corporate Law from London University. Results from the final exams which he sat last August, reveal that he passed the exams 'with merit'.

In 1996 Layne was awarded his Bachelors of Law (LLB) Degree 'with honours' from the same London University.

Ewart Layne hails from La Digue, St. Andrew's. He attended Holy Innocence, the St. George's R. C. Boys' primary school, and The Presentation Boys College. Layne taught Mathematics and Economics up to A'Level at the St. David's Secondary School from 1977 to 1979. During the 1979-1983 Revolution, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was Deputy Commander of the People's Revolutionary Army. He was one of four members of the Grenada 17 who were interviewed recently on GBN TV, where he explained and expressed regrets for his actions during the crisis and tragedy of October 19, 1983.

Ewart Layne has been one of the teachers and co-ordinators of the Richmond Hill Prison Education Programme over the last several years. In addition to working in the prison furniture-making shop and studying at nights in his cell for his Law degree, he taught Mathematics, Statistics and Law to inmates-students at several different academic levels during those years. Layne has stated that his goals are to be reunited with his family, and to pursue a career in Business and Business Law, whenever he is released.
